First baby in Ireland born free from rare genetic condition following successful PGD Treatment

A baby girl is the first in Ireland to be born free from Smith-Lemli-Opitz Syndrome, following PGD treatment. Both of her parents carry the gene for this rare inherited disease. She was born in Cork University Maternity Hospital in mid-September, after her parents underwent Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis treatment at Cork Fertility Centre.

Cork Rebel Week’s Visa Day raised an incredible €52,000 for the Children’s Unit of Cork University Hospital. On the 16th of October during Cork’s very own Independence Day, hundreds of volunteers from across the county set up “Visa Checkpoints,” selling a €2 “Visa” for Cork, with all proceeds benefiting the CUH Charity’s Children’s Unit Appeal.

Children in Cork University Hospital get some T.L.C

Cork University Hospital got an emergency delivery of a cuddly kind when a giant teddy and hundreds of smaller teddy bears were delivered by a fire engine to the children treated in CUH. The soft toys were donated to CUH Charity by the Irish Freemasons as part of their TLC (Teddies for Loving Care) appeal.
